When she was two years old, living in London, England, she was diagnosed with tuberculosis. She was quarantined and treated in a sanatorium for almost a year, where parental visits were only allowed on weekends. The year of isolation became, as B.K.S. Iyengar says “a gift of illness” and Heather believes it allowed her to see reality clearly by lifting the veil of all illusion. She practices and teaches yoga to keep her grounded in this understanding.
Through her practice she has realized that the human need for love uncovers a mysterious sense of separation that we have from our authentic selves. In this instance, authentic self means our true and basic nature, beneath the fantasies, artifices and constraints that distort our usual experience. In this subtle and clear attunement, not only to ourselves but to the world around us, life is allowed to flow.
Yoga brought her to spiritual oneness, defined as the balance of inward and outward human experience. The deepest contact we can have with our own self and with everyone and everything that we encounter. It means we are able to see through the surface of people and things to their essence. That when we touch a plant, rock, animal or another human being, we can feel the streaming of their life force and the responsiveness of the subtle intelligence and love within them. This is why she called her style of yoga “Awakening Lotus”.
She is the proud mother of two beautiful, evolving human beings.
